CT Abdomen - Read Like A Radiologist
Practicing viewing, describing, and interpreting abdominal CT scans the way a radiologist does. A hands-on preparation for your teaching session.
Self-reflection & preparation
You have completed the module and practiced interpreting CT images, recognizing pathology, and approaching radiological imaging systematically. Well done — this is a solid foundation for your further development in radiology.
Take time for this reflection and answer the questions as honestly as possible — not for assessment, but for yourself. The better you know where you stand and what you want to learn, the more you will get out of a teaching session with a radiologist. A teaching/practical session is the ideal opportunity to ask a radiologist questions, practice with real images, and learn the tips and tricks of practice that you won't find in a book. The more concrete your learning goals and questions, the more valuable that learning session will be.
Copy the text below into a Word document (or write it on paper), fill it out, and bring it to your next teaching session or discuss it with a radiologist in your environment.
Students at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (Maastricht) should bring their learning goals and questions to the Radiology – CT abdomen practical session.
Self-reflection
Preparation for CT abdomen practical session.
Self-assessment (circle or delete whichever does not apply)
Indicate, for each learning goal, how confident you feel on a scale of 1 to 5:
1 = I do not yet understand this sufficiently / 5 = I can apply this independently
Statements:
“I can recognize the different CT scan phases and explain their clinical relevance” — 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5
‘’I can generally recognize common abdominal pathology on CT’’ — 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5
“I can approach CT images systematically”— 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5
‘’I can link CT findings to a clinical question’’ — 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5
Open questions:
- CT abdomen - What I found most difficult about this topic:
- What questions would you like to ask the radiologist? (These can be general questions, about daily practice, or about things you have encountered in the clinic that you would like to understand better.)
Formulate at least 2 personal learning goals for the return day*:
1.
2.
*For inspiration: 'I want to understand when to request which scan protocol,' 'I want to get better at recognizing the different bowel structures,' or 'I want to understand how best to detect free air.'
Preparation practical session
Go through the following checklist before you go to the return day:
- I have completed all parts of the module.
- I have thought about what I found difficult and what I still want to practice
- I have formulated at least 2 personal learning goals
- I have prepared questions about parts that remain unclear
- I am bringing my learning goals and questions to the day of return
After completing all these steps, you are prepared for the radiology practical session.
End of Module.
